History

Barkley Sound, BC
1973

The Rendezvous lodge was established in 1973 when Dave and Renate Christie bought this unique piece of land. They blasted the site where the lodge stands with dynamite and built the A-frame from the yellow cedars that stood on the property. The name “Rendezvous” comes from the old wooden mission ship that Dave bought and ran trips with during weekends. Nowadays, Peter and Kathy run a 36′ (12 meter) fiberglass ship for our diving trips in the area. Staying with us is a complete dive and nature experience. We often see whales, bears and eagles and give our guests time to make photos of this great wildlife.

The lodge

With 5 double occupancy bedrooms we can accommodate up to 10 divers. We have a dedicated class / camera room for courses or camera set up. Other amenities include a hot tub, kayaks, charging options with power 24 hours a day, a limited repair facility, and some spare dive gear.

The dive boats

The Rendezvous I is a 36 ft  (12 m.) canoe cove boat with a 330 HP engine. Especially adapted for diving, this boat will be your base for your underwater adventures. It has a fully closed and heated galley and an aluminum covered stern. With a special ladder for Divers and a swim platform that facilitates easy entry, it is the ideal dive boat. For smaller dive groups and kayak transport we use the 7 meter long “Grunt Sculpin” It is a faster boat and a great film / photo platform

The wildlife

Rendezvous Dive Adventures is literally in the middle of nature and thus we see lots of wildlife. So make sure you bring your land camera along for your dive trip. Depending on the season we regularly see bears on our beach, whales in front of the lodge, eagles soaring over or hummingbirds buzzing you. They make for great memories

We Do More!!!

Our Stewardship Programs

Derelict fishing gear removal
Ghost nets are nets which are lost on a reef or other underwater structure. These ghost nets continue to catch and kill unintended species of marine life ranging from marine mammals and invertebrates to fish and even birds. Ghost net removal is one of the aspects of our Volunteer Diver Derelict Fishing Gear Removal Program.  Read More
Shark Survey Week

Shark Survey Week is a citizen science project that was set up by Peter Mieras and is scientifically supported by Dr. Chris Harvey-Clark from Dalhousie University and Shawn Larson from the Seattle Aquarium. Each year Rendezvous Dive Adventures welcomes divers who want to participate in the survey, and look for Bluntnose six gill sharks, ratfish and dogfish. Read More Shark Survey Week

Kelp and Critters

The DVD “Kelp and Critters” tells a story of 4 seasons of marine life in the Pacific Northwest. It took over 3 years go get all the footage for this compelling story about the life of the animals that live in or are connected with the Pacific Ocean. Read More

Marine Mammals

Barkley Sound is home to a large range of marine mammals. We regularly see Humpback whales, Transient (Biggs) orca, Grey whales, sea lions (Stellar and California) and Harbour seals. Occasionally we see Sea otters and Minke whales. Read More

Seaforestation

This latest stewardship program started with a dive for a local kelp farmer and resulted in working on Ocean Wise’s “Seaforestation” project. Ocean Wise, Canadian Kelp Resources, the Bamfield Marine Science Centre and Rendezvous Dive Adventures are pooling their knowledge and resources to test the concept of “green gravel” in a real life experiment. Other projects

One of the most important tools of our stewardship program is education and outreach. Without people knowing what issues there are, what life there is in water, how it relates to humans, forests and ecosystem components, there will be no drive to protect and take care. Read More
